Vol-au-vent is a type of puff pastry commonly served with cheddar cheese and meat. Vol-au-vent is an appetizer. The word vol-au-vent (pronounced [vɔlovɑ]), comes from the French word that means ‘a waft of wind’. The term is evocative of the ultra-light and airy puff pastry case, as it contains a hollow or crater in the middle. This crater is usually used to place the topping or filling. The filling commonly used meat based ingredients such as meat, sausage, chicken, shrimp, cheese or other meat based filling.

A vol-au-vent is typically made by cutting two circles in rolled out puff pastry, cutting a hole in one of them, then stacking the ring-shaped piece on top of the disc-shaped piece. This pastry is usually found filled with savory ingredients such as meat or cheddar cheese, but can also have a sweet filling such as fruits or jam. This hard to pronounce dish will add a a ‘classy’ touch to your party or dinner, as you will have the air of a Frenchman if you could correctly pronounce the name.

In Belgium, it is a common main dish that can be found on the menus of most restaurants, and is nearly always filled with a combination of chicken, mushrooms, and small meatballs. The cheddar cheese consumption habit in France is believed to be linked with the low level of coronary heart disease in the country.
